2026 US estimate

US paycheck calculator for 2026

Estimate federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state income tax for any state. A traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health premium are included. The result is a pay stub, not a tax return.

Take-home Federal Social Security Medicare State 401(k)

How this paycheck is calculated

Start with gross wages. Subtract a pre-tax health premium, because those cafeteria-plan premiums usually reduce both income tax and FICA. Subtract a traditional 401(k) only from income-tax wages. Social Security stays 6.2% until the 2026 wage base of $184,500. Medicare stays 1.45% on every dollar, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare tax after $200,000 of wages from the job. Federal income tax then uses the 2026 standard deduction and the seven brackets from 10% through 37%.

Income-tax wages = gross − pre-tax health − traditional 401(k)
Federal tax = brackets(income-tax wages − standard deduction)
Net pay = gross − federal − Social Security − Medicare − state tax − 401(k) − health

On a $75,000 salary, single, no 401(k), this estimate keeps $61,593 in Texas and $58,805 in California. The gap is state income tax: $0 in Texas and $2,788 in California. Federal tax and FICA match.

What a real stub can still add

Every state

Each page uses the same federal math and that state's income-tax table, with a worked example at $60,000, $100,000, and $150,000.

Questions

Why is this different from my pay stub?

Employers withhold using IRS Publication 15-T and the choices on your Form W-4. This page annualizes federal tax with the standard deduction and divides it by the number of paychecks. Local tax, disability insurance, retirement match, Roth 401(k), and insurance premiums are extra lines a real stub may show.

Does a traditional 401(k) lower Social Security tax?

No. A traditional 401(k) reduces federal and state income tax. Social Security and Medicare are still calculated on wages after pre-tax health premiums, not after the 401(k). The 2026 employee deferral cap used here is $24,500.

Which states do not tax wages?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax wage income. Washington still has a long-term care payroll tax and a capital-gains tax that this estimate leaves out. New Hampshire's old interest-and-dividends tax is gone.

Is the child tax credit in these numbers?

No. The child tax credit is usually claimed on the tax return. It changes a paycheck only if you enter it on Form W-4. Adding it here would overstate take-home pay for most people.

Do you store my salary?

No. The calculator is JavaScript in your browser. The page does not have an account, and the salary is not uploaded. If you turn on advertising later, the ad network can set its own cookies. That is described on the privacy page.
